MINOR LEAGUE NOTEBOOK: H.-W.'S GLUSHON GETS A PLEASANT SURPRISE.

Byline: HEATHER GRIPP

Staff Writer

Jason Glushon thought his season was coming to a disappointing end when the pitcher was called into his manager's office last week and told he would not be making his final scheduled start for the team. Glushon, a Harvard-Westlake of Studio City product, quickly learned he was instead adding another chapter to what has been an improbable path to baseball success.

Glushon was promoted to Double-A Midland, making the jump from the rookie-level Arizona League A's. He made his Midland debut Wednesday and was a candidate to start Monday's season finale.

Glushon signed with the Oakland A's organization after going undrafted this spring as a senior at Emory, a small Division III college in Atlanta.

After beginning his pro career as a reliever, Glushon went 4-3 with a 3.75 ERA in 15 games (eight starts) in the Arizona League. Known for his control, he issued just three walks in 57 2/3 innings.

Also: The rookie Gulf Coast League Yankees defeated the Dodgers 8-1 Friday in the deciding game of the league's championship series. Justin Segal (Calabasas) earned the Yankees' first win of the series, allowing one hit in 12/3 innings of relief. Andrew Lambo (Newbury Park) had three hits for the Dodgers in the three-game series, including a home run and two RBIs in the Dodgers' victory Thursday. Lambo finished with a .343 average during the regular season. ... Ozzie Lewis (Kennedy of Granda Hills) contributed an RBI in a 5-1 victory over Danville to help the Elizabethton Twins clinch the rookie-level Appalachian League championship on Friday.
