MINOLTA TO DEVELOP DIGITAL COPIERS AND DIGITAL FACSIMILE MACHINES IN SUPPORT OF NEW MICROSOFT ARCHITECTURE

NEW YORK, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Minolta Corporation announced today they will be working with Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MSFT) to develop a new generation of copiers and fax machines that harness the power of the PC and will transform the way people work in office environments. The new "intelligent" copiers and fax machines will make it possible for people to control copier and fax functions from their desktop computers.
Minolta has dedicated more than 25 engineers to work with Microsoft on its Microsoft At Work(TM) architecture for integrating office equipment with computers. "We will create a totally new office environment that takes advantage of the PC and puts unprecedented power at people's fingertips," according to Mike Stramaglio, Minolta Corporation's Business Equipment Division, vice president.
"Minolta's track record in developing new technologies complements Microsoft's proven leadership in establishing software standards," added Stramaglio. "In addition to having one of the best business equipment patent portfolios, Minolta was named the fastest growing copier company in the United States. So we see this as the perfect match for our two industries. We are very proud to be associated with Microsoft in developing the office of the future.
"Minolta recognizes the Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) operating system as the definitive operating standard and our Microsoft At Work machines will be designed to leverage the ease-of-use and consistency of the familiar Microsoft Windows environment for unprecedented productivity," Stramaglio said. Microsoft At Work machines operate as fully functioning stand-alones, or as PC peripherals providing the greatest flexibility.
Microsoft At Work copiers and fax machines will set new standards for digital office communications by providing rich digital functions, including a familiar graphical user interface, desktop PC connectivity, electronic distribution and exchange of information, in addition to the standard group III fax equipment. Other key benefits of this new system will be document security, integrated messaging, electronic distribution and simplified wide area communications.
Minolta Corporation, headquartered in Ramsey, N.J., is the largest subsidiary of Minolta Camera Co. Ltd., of Osaka, Japan, a leading manufacturer of cameras, business equipment, radiometric instruments and planetariums. The Minolta Business Equipment Division manufactures and markets office automation products including black-and-white and digital full-color copiers, facsimile machines and related equipment.
