 MINNESOTA SUN PUBLICATIONS ANNOUNCES PUBLISHER
BLOOMINGTON, Minn., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Minnesota Sun

Publications (MSP) today named Donald W. Thurlow to the new post of publisher of the group of 23 community newspapers in suburban Minneapolis. Thurlow, 44, will begin his new duties April 20.
James B. Shaffer, president and chief executive officer of Guy Gannett Publishing Co., which owns MSP, and Lee J. Canning, vice president and general manager of MSP since 1987, made the joint announcement. The timing of Thurlow's appointment, they said, ensures a smooth transition in anticipation of Canning's retirement. During the transition period, Canning will report to Thurlow who will progressively assume direct supervision of Canning's chain-of-command.
Thurlow comes to MSP from the Baltimore Sun where he spent 13 years, most of it as publisher of the Sun's suburban editions. Prior to that he was the Sun's retail advertising manager. Before joining the Sun he spent five years

in various management positions at Stromberg Publications, Inc., publishers of weekly newspapers in suburban Baltimore.
"We are fortunate to have a person of Don Thurlow's caliber joining this organization," Shaffer said. "Lee Canning's team has made significant progress in developing this company, and Don brings precisely those skills needed to continue that progress."
Canning said, "I have been planning for retirement for some time, and this will establish the basis of an orderly transition. I am eager to introduce Don to the suburban Minneapolis market and to my colleagues at MSP."
"I'm looking forward to joining MSP and Guy Gannett Publishing Co.," said Thurlow. "I'm most impressed with the communities served by the Sun papers and by the people I have met in the organization. I look forward to being part of this company's future."
In the Baltimore area, Thurlow is active in a number of business and charitable organizations. He is a member of the board of directors of the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce and a director of the Associated Catholic Charities of Maryland, and is a past director of the Cathedral Foundation and the Baltimore Better Business Bureau. He has a B.A. degree from LaSalle University. Thurlow and his wife Terrie have three children, ages 8, 6 and 3. They plan to relocate to Minnesota this summer.
Canning started his newspaper career as a general assignment reporter for the Winona (MN) Republican Herald in 1950. In 1958 he joined the Minneapolis Star Tribune where he remained for 26 years. Canning held various editorial and business positions at the Star Tribune, and was business manager and senior vice president when he left in 1984. He became publisher of Minnesota Suburban Newspapers in 1985 and was named vice president and general manager when MSN and Post Publications were acquired by Guy Gannett Publishing. He currently is a member of the board of directors of the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce and Health One, a health care delivery organization based in the Twin Cities, and is 1st vice president of Suburban Newspapers of America.
Minnesota Sun Publications was created in 1987 when Guy Gannett Publishing Co. acquired Minnesota Suburban Newspapers and Post Publications, two separate chains of Twin Cities weekly newspapers. GGPC merged the two operations, which today publish 23 community weekly newspapers with a total circulation of 327,000. It has 200 employees.
In addition to MSP, Guy Gannett Publishing owns Shakopee Valley Printing, a commercial printer, located in Shakopee, MN; four newspapers in Maine; three dailies; the Portland Press Herald; the Kennebec Journal; and the Central Maine Morning Sentinel; and the Maine Sunday Telegram. The company also owns four television stations; WGME-TV in Portland (ME); WGGB-TV in Springfield (MA); KGAN- TV in Cedar Rapids (IA); and WICS-TV in Springfield (IL). Guy Gannett Publishing also owns and operates two broadcast towers in central and south Florida. The company has approximately 1700 employees, is privately held, and not related to the publicly traded Gannett, Inc.
