MINNESOTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO APPEAL ARMORY DECISION

MINNESOTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO APPEAL ARMORY DECISION
ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The executive committee of

the Minnesota Historical Society on Jan. 8 authorized the society to appeal Hennepin County District Judge Steve Lange's Monday recommendation to dissolve the temporary injunction that had barred demolition of the Minneapolis Armory. The appeal will be filed as soon as Judge Lange issues his formal ruling.
Judge Lange had imposed the injunction 15 months ago in response to a suit brought by the society against Hennepin County to block demolition of the historically and architecturally significant 56-year- old armory. In its suit, the society contended that the armory is protected by state preservation laws. The county had chosen the armory site for construction of a jail.
Nina Archabal, director of the Historical Society, emphasized that the society's decision to authorize an appeal is rooted in the society's organizational mission and its statutory responsibility to protect and care for irreplaceable and unique resources throughout the state. Archabal noted that the society's quick action is designed to encourage a speedy resolution of the issue.
The appeal will be formally filed by the Minnesota Attorney General's office, which has been representing the society throughout the litigation.
