MINNEAPOLIS YOUTH TO HOST CULTURAL/EDUCATION CARNIVAL
MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Young people from Minneapolis

are doing their part to help their city celebrate the 500th Anniversary of Columbus discovering the new world by hosting a cultural and educational carnival. The youngsters, part of The Nestle Chocolate Very Best in Youth Program(TM), are kicking off their celebration on Friday, Aug. 7, 10 a.m. at Northeast Middle School, 2955 Hayes St.
The carnival will feature the Heart of the Beast Production puppet show, "Discover America," at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. In addition, there will be games, food, aerobics and musical entertainment throughout the day for the more than 800 young people expected to attend. Participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item which will be donated to a local food bank.
New York Knicks veteran Kiki Vandeweghe and Crunch, the mascot for the Minnesota Timberwolves, will be on hand at the carnival to distribute audiotape packets titled "Be Safe"(TM). The packets, endorsed by Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, are designed to promote awareness and present the facts about HIV. They also encourage young people to develop strong self-esteem and interpersonal communication.
According to Kathy Truax, Nestle liaison in Minneapolis and program director of the Ridgedale YMCA, "Through the carnival, the young people hope to create an educational awareness among their peers, while providing an exciting day for participants."
Thanks to a $10,000 grant from The Nestle Chocolate & Confection Company, these young people, from a collaboration of youth-serving agencies, are taking part in a unique program that is designed to help them build self-confidence. The youngsters are given the responsibility to decide how to spend their grant money and also to carry out their choices.
Now in its second year, the program encourages collaboration among leading youth-serving agencies. Minneapolis is one of 15 cities in the United States participating in the program.
