MILES TO DOUBLE PRODUCTION CAPACITY OF MALEIC ANHYDRIDE
BY BUILDING 60 MILLION POUND CAPACITY AT BAYTOWN, TEXAS FACILITY
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Miles Inc. announced today that it will double production capacity of maleic anhydride -- to 125 million pounds -- by establishing a 60 million pound capability at its multidivisional Baytown, Texas manufacturing facility. Maleic anhydride is sold by the Miles Organic Products Division. Miles(A) is headquartered in Pittsburgh. (On Jan. 1, 1992, all Mobay businesses began operating under the corporate name Miles Inc.)
Startup of the new capability at Baytown is expected to take place in late 1994.
Details on the multimillion dollar capacity startup were announced today by Dr. Jochen C. Wulff, executive vice president of the Miles Organic Products Division. The company currently has a maleic anhydride production capacity of 65 million pounds at its Houston manufacturing operation.
"The capital investment will make Miles the second largest producer of maleic anhydride in North America," Wulff noted. "Most importantly, it will enable us to meet expected future demand."
Maleic anhydride is used to manufacture unsaturated polyester resins, lube oil additives, malic and fumaric acids, agricultural chemicals and other specialty products.
The production capacity at Baytown will be configured to allow further capacity increases at the site.
The 1,000-acre Baytown facility started operations in 1971. Products currently manufactured there include polyurethane raw materials for rigid and flexible foams, polyurethane coating chemicals, Makrolon polycarbonate resins and inorganic process chemicals.
 (A) -- Miles Inc. is a chemicals, health care, and imaging technologies company with headquarters in Pittsburgh. The company employs about 30,000 people and has sales of more than $6 billion.
