MILES INC. TO BUILD FIBERS PLANT IN SOUTH CAROLINA
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Miles Inc. today announced plans

to build a synthetic fibers production facility at its Bushy Park plant in Berkeley County, S.C., 25 miles northeast of Charleston.
According to Helge H. Wehmeier, Miles Inc. president and chief executive officer, construction of the $140 million facility will begin in early 1993, with start-up scheduled for 1995. The plant is expected to employ approximately 150 people when operating at full capacity.
"The U.S. demand for these products is forecasted to grow, and we expect to meet part of this increased demand, as well as create additional capacity for export," Wehmeier said. "This new facility represents the company's first production of fibers in the United States and Miles' long-term commitment to providing high-quality products to our customers."
The unit will produce Dorlastan elastic fibers, used as a filament yarn in the manufacture of sportswear, swimwear, lingerie and hosiery. Capacity is slated for 3,000 tons per year. Total worldwide capacity of Dorlastan, including that of Miles' parent company's facility in Dormagen, Germany, will reach 8,000 tons per year by 1996.
"This is very good news for South Carolina. We are proud to welcome Miles' synthetic fibers production facility to Berkeley County," said Gov. Carroll Campbell, whose office helped land the project for South Carolina. "Companies continue to invest here with an unprecedented level of confidence. In just the last two years, Miles has already committed to investing $200 million in the area. With the additional $140 million investment represented in this project, South Carolina will add to its reputation as a place where jobs, opportunity and growth are not just a way of life but also good business."
The governor has committed $650,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds for necessary infrastructure and site development. The Coordinating Council for Economic Development is contributing $350,000 for access roads, and Berkeley County has approved $1.5 million in special source revenue bonds for infrastructure improvements. Special Schools also will be providing training for prospective workers.
Earlier this year, Miles completed a new $70 million plus organic pigments plant in Bushy Park and, in 1991, began construction of a $100 million film- and photographic paper-finishing plant for its Agfa Division; start-up of the latter unit is expected in July 1993.
In addition, the company built a $30 million biological wastewater treatment facility at the site -- the second of its kind in the United States. Known as Tower Biology, this proprietary system enhances nature's water purifying process, with above-ground tanks significantly reducing the potential for groundwater contamination.
Established in 1970, the Bushy Park plant is a multi-divisional manufacturing site for Miles Inc. Current production there includes dyestuffs, pigments and specialty colorants for the textile, paper, automotive and detergent industries; organic intermediates for industrial water treatment and other applications; synthetic menthols and sunscreen agents; and specialty chemicals for the rubber manufacturing industry.
Miles Inc. is a Fortune 100, research-based company with major businesses in chemicals, health care and imaging technologies. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, the company employs some 26,000 people at its operations throughout North America. In 1991, the company's sales were $6.2 billion.
