MILES INC. TO ADD MALEIC ANHYDRIDE CAPACITY IN TEXAS; WILL NEARLY TRIPLE CURRENT PRODUCTION

PITTSBURGH, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Miles Inc. announced today that it plans to nearly triple production of maleic anhydride to 180 million pounds from its current capacity of 65 million pounds.
The increased capacity will be established at the company's multidivisional facility in Baytown, Texas (about 30 miles southeast of Houston), with start-up expected in late 1994. Miles currently produces the material at its manufacturing operation in Houston.
Miles issued an announcement one year ago regarding its plans to increase production capacity of this intermediate used in the manufacture of unsaturated polyester resins, lube-oil additives, agricultural chemicals and other specialty products. At that time, the company's plans called for an increase of only 60 million pounds.
"Since our initial announcement, we have taken a more aggressive and strategic approach to the anticipated growth of existing and potentially new applications for this product," said Dr. Richard L. White, executive vice president of Miles Inc. and president of the Organic Products Division.
"This $93 million capital investment clearly demonstrates Miles' long-term commitment to the customers we serve and to the entire industry. In fact, Miles will be North America's second largest producer of maleic anhydride and a major player worldwide," White added.
In support of this project, the company plans to increase its research and development efforts to develop derivatives for potential new applications. Additionally, Miles said the new production capacity at the Baytown site will be configured to allow for additional capacity increases in the future.
"One of the reasons Baytown was chosen as the site of this expansion," said White, "was the assistance provided to Miles by local tax authorities and the Baytown Area/West Chambers County Economic Development Foundation." Established in 1971, the 900-acre Baytown facility employs 1,100 people.
The site manufactures more than 700 million pounds of product per year, including polyurethane raw materials used in automotive parts, paints and coatings, and insulation; 500 grades of polycarbonate plastics used in compact discs, computers, power tools and hundreds of everyday products; and various types of process chemicals.
Miles Inc. is a Fortune 100, research-based company with major businesses in chemicals, health care and imaging technologies. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, the company employs some 23,000 people at its operations throughout North America. In 1992, the company's sales were about $6.5 billion.
