Mikels told a meeting of the Highway 118 Task Safety Force that putting the issue on the ballot as an advisory vote would help officials gauge the level of support for Caltrans' $5.8 million expansion plan, which has come under fire from some Somis residents. The vote also would test the validity of a county Transportation Commission survey which found that 72 percent of county residents and 62 percent of Somis residents supporting the prpoject, she said. However, the local group Save Our Somis, wants Caltrans to undertake a less-drastic expansion of the intersection in order to preserve the rural character of their city. County election officials said putting an initiative on the ballot would require the signatures of 20,817 registered voters. The deadline was Tuesday for the initiative to get on Nov. 7, although officials said the Board of Supervisors has the authority to put the issue on the ballot. However, Mikels said she would not put the plan to her colleagues because she thinks the petition drive should be a grass-roots effort.
