MIGHTY DUCKS UPDATE: NOTHING 'MIGHTY' ABOUT ANAHEIM TEAM'S NICKNAME TO GO BY 'DUCKS' ONLY.

Byline: A.J. Perez Staff Writer

At times, the name of Orange County's NHL NHL Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, see there  club has been ``Mighty'' awkward.

``People are always making fun of the name and the movies,'' goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere said. ``It wasn't that big of a deal to us, but a lot of people throughout the league talked about it.''

Those quips will likely dissipate next season, when the team goes from the Mighty Ducks

``In selecting the name the Anaheim Ducks, we are respecting the heritage of a tremendous organization that has been a very important and visible part of the community,'' said Henry Samueli Henry Samueli (born September 20, 1954 in Buffalo, New York) is co-founder, chairman, and chief technology officer of the Broadcom Corporation and a philanthropist in the Orange County, California community. , who purchased the team along with his wife, Susan, from Disney last June.

The Mighty Ducks came into existence as an expansion team in 1993, a year after the first ``Mighty Ducks'' movie hit theaters. Two sequels and an animated series followed.

``I think this was the right way to go,'' Giguere said. ``Dropping the name 'Mighty' distances the team from Disney, but keeping the name 'Ducks' makes sense. The team has been around for more than 10 years so there's some tradition there.''

When the Samuelis took control of the team, they told the media they were going to let the fans decide whether a name change was warranted. They eventually hired Irvine-based PainePR, which polled fans and conducted other research.

``The majority of those surveyed, nearly two thirds, supported some sort of name change,' said PainePR CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  David Paine.

Paine said fans also wanted to see the team's legacy, which includes coming within a game of winning the Stanley Cup Stanley Cup: see hockey, ice.

``The process is still very much under way and we do not expect to be ready to make any further announcements until the end of the season,'' Henry Samueli said.

Those announcements could involve a new jersey, logo and mascot.

The transition should go more smoothly than when Anaheim's other pro franchise decided a name change was in order. Angels owner Arte Moreno sparked an uproar and lawsuit when he altered the baseball franchise's name from the Anaheim Angels to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim For the pre-1958 Pacific Coast League team, see .
