MIDWAY HEYDAY ANNUAL CARNIVAL IS CLEARLY KIDS' STUFF.

Byline: Amy Raisin Staff Writer

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - Brothers Kyle and Robert Dingman looked the part of rodeo fans Sunday at the Simi Valley Days Carnival, wearing cowboy hats, boots, plastic holsters and ice cream mustaches on their satisfied faces.

``We both agree that the rodeo is the best part, the bull riding,'' said Kyle, 9, who spent the weekend visiting his Simi Valley grandparents grandparents nplabuelos mpl

Seven-year-old Robert agreed, letting his brother talk while he savored his ice cream cone An ice cream cone or cornet is a cone-shaped pastry, usually made of a wafer similar in texture to a waffle, in which ice cream is served, allowing it to be eaten without a bowl or spoon. .

The annual carnival, which ran from Wednesday through Sunday, was clearly about the kids, as screams were heard from the whizzing rides while others spent their time trying to win a jumbo stuffed animal

Timothy Zarlenga, 3, had a cast on his arm so he stuck to the games. His fishing expertise snagged an inflatable baseball bat that was nearly as big as he was.

``It was really fun. I'm Timothy the treasure-chest-surprise fisherman,'' said the Simi Valley boy as he clung to his mom, begging to play the basketball toss game.

Among the spinning apple ride, the 360-degree Chicago Loop The Loop is what locals call the historical center of downtown Chicago. It is the second-largest central business district in the United States, after Midtown Manhattan. Bounded on the west and north by the Chicago River, on the east by Lake Michigan, and on the south by Roosevelt  and the pony rides were some older kids who admitted that the carnival is a part of their history.

``I've been coming to this carnival since I was a little girl,'' said Kelly Maropulos, a 16-year-old Simi Valley High student. ``I used to come with my best friend when we were like 7 or 8 and we'd always ride the same rides.

``The scarier the better,'' she added, though riding the Quasar this year was a bit of a fright. While the ride swung and spun, her little sister nearly became sick from the motion but made it through.

Marita Faulwell, chairwoman of Simi Valley Days 2000, said the weather at the beginning of the week may have kept some visitors away, but she praised Saturday and Sunday's sunny skies.

``We were a little hurt by the weather, but now it's great,'' she said. ``It's such a fun way to celebrate the community, and the kids just get so excited.''

Two kids got a thrill even after they left the carnival, each winning a foot scooter when their names were drawn from the raffle bucket. Every child under 12 who wore a sports or youth-related uniform got to put a ticket in the drawing.

Faulwell said that Jared Honda and Amanda Rein, both of Simi Valley, screamed and hollered when they received the call that their names had been chosen.

One more child was expected to be awarded a scooter at the end of the carnival, Faulwell said.
