MICROWAVE LABORATORIES' CEO RECEIVES ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY AWARD

RALEIGH, N.C., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Microwave Laboratories, Inc. (MLI) (NASDAQ: MWVL) of Raleigh, N.C., announced that the Company's CEO, Carl Everleigh, has been presented the 1992 Advanced Technology Award by the Inventors Club of America, for his contribution to the invention of a new Variable Frequency Microwave Furnace. The Award was presented at a ceremony held at the club's annual meeting to Everleigh together with Don Bible and Robert Lauf, scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. MLI and Oak Ridge collaborated on the development of a new microwave technology that permits uniform heating of advanced materials over large areas. The Variable Frequency Microwave Furnace incorporates a Traveling Wave Tube (TWT) to produce the capability of distributing high frequency microwave signals over a wide frequency range, while also sweeping around a center frequency. The result is the ability to tune the frequency for best heating of any specific material then sweep for even distribution of the high energy throughout the furnace chamber.
The Variable Frequency Furnace technology is patent pending through the Oak Ridge design and application work and has been licensed by MLI for worldwide commercialization. Initial process applications targeted by MLI include industrial advance materials, scientific and medical heating requirements. "This is a major development toward extending microwave processing of advanced material from the Laboratories into production scale processing," said Everleigh. "We plan to continue with specific process applications jointly with Oak Ridge and other institutional and industrial partners."
