 MICROSOFT SELECTS MAYNARD ELECTRONICS
TO DEVELOP WINDOWS NT DATA BACKUP SERVICES
LAKE MARY, Fla., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Maynard Electronics, Inc., an Archive(R) Company, today announced that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) has licensed the Maynard data backup services for inclusion in the Microsoft(R) Windows NT(TM) operating system. Microsoft also has licensed the Maynard tape backup format for use within all of its software packages.
Microsoft selected Maynard to develop the Windows NT Backup Utility on the basis of Microsoft's experience with MaynStream(R) for Windows software, the Maynard(R) backup solution based on Microsoft Windows. MaynStream for Windows software, the first Windows-based backup solution designed for both individual PC and network users, utilizes the Microsoft Windows graphical user interface (GUI) to accomplish backup operations for local drives, servers and remote workstations, with a simple click of a mouse. Scheduled to begin shipping in April, MaynStream for Windows software is designed for use with Microsoft Windows 3.0 and 3.1 applications.
Windows NT is Microsoft's new advanced version of the Windows operating system. Windows NT is robust, 32-bit operating system providing advanced features such as preemptive multi-tasking, security, integrated networking, a high performance I/O system and support for symmetric multi-processing systems. In addition to offering advanced features, Windows NT compliments Microsoft Windows 3.0/3.1 by providing the same user interface and supporting the same Windows and MS-DOS applications as Windows 3.0/3.1.
By using MaynStream software and the Maynard logical tape format, Microsoft provides developers and users with a standard method for ensuring compatibility of existing data as they move to the Windows NT environment. Working transparently with Microsoft applications, the Windows NT Backup Utility will be able to read a variety of existing tapes formatted under other systems, including MaynStream and Archive tape drives.
"Maynard was the logical choice to build the NT Backup Utility for Windows NT because of the popularity of the Maynard tape backup format, the quality of Maynard's software development, and the close working relationship between our two companies," said Paul Maritz, senior vice president of Microsoft's System Division. "Windows NT is designed to meet corporate and user's computing needs for the 1990's; support from Maynard and other industry leaders underscores the importance of the Windows environment."
"With Windows NT, user will get a complete offering, with a robust, high-performance operating system and an integrated backup solution from two of the most experienced companies in the business," said George Rea, president of Maynard. "As we expand our relationship with Microsoft, Maynard will continue to be a leader in the evolution of the next generation of backup systems. Users now and in the future can count on Maynard to provide the broadest possible selection of top-quality backup systems to safeguard their mission-critical data."
The Windows NT Backup Utility offers Windows NT users seamless access to tape backup applications. Maynard's work with the Microsoft Windows NT Backup Utility is based on its development of MaynStream for Windows software. MaynStream for Windows software, a full-featured backup solution, faithfully follows the interface used in Microsoft Windows applications so that users immediately will find the system familiar.
"The MaynStream for Windows backup program is designed to that the user will immediately be familiar with the Windows environment, and that the backup application will be a natural extension of all Windows applications," said Robert Wight, vice president, Software Business Development for Maynard. "Our relationship with Microsoft allows us to build upon their expertise in operating systems to gain a clear understanding of the role that backup and file management plays in the operating systems environment."
MaynStream for Windows software features a flexible scheduler for unattended operations and advanced summary reporting on tape operations. Additionally, this software application offers background operation capabilities, disk-based cataloging for the efficient selection of one or more tapes, Fast File Restore for quick file restoration, dynamic server login/logout, file grooming, server/volume naming, a scrollable summary window for viewing the status of the backup operation, and a virtual file system for managing large volumes of tapes in a library.
In keeping with Maynard's commitment to provide compatibility within and between all of the product lines, all tapes created by MaynStream for Windows software can be read and restored by MaynStream for DOS, MaynStream for OS/2, MaynStream NLM, MaxStream(R) products for Macintosh computers and LANStream(TM). In addition, MaynStream for Windows software can read and restore tapes created by MaynStream for DOS, MaynStream for OS/2, MaynStream NLM, MaxStream and LANStream systems. This provides a simple and convenient way to move files between different operating systems.
