Slate, Microsoft Corp.'s on-line magazine of politics and culture, debuted Monday on the World Wide Web under the editorial guidance of former New Republic editor Michael Kinsley Michael Kinsley (born March 9, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American political journalist, commentator television host and liberal pundit. Primarily active in print media as both a writer and editor, he also became known to television audiences as a co-host on Crossfire . Slate joins a growing number of magazines being published on the Internet. ``The name? It means nothing, or practically nothing,'' Kinsley wrote in an introductory column. ``We chose it as an empty vessel into which we can pour meaning. We hope Slate will come to mean good, original journalism in this new medium.'' The weekly magazine will be free to Web browsers The following is a list of web browsers. Microsoft Network - The Microsoft Network , Microsoft's on-line service, will receive Slate free. ``We believe that expecting readers to share the cost, as they do in print, is the only way serious journalism on the Web can be self-supporting,'' Kinsley wrote. In addition to feature articles, Slate includes reviews, commentary and an e-mail discussion group. Some features will be accompanied by video or audio clips, and new items are expected to be posted almost daily. The magazine is the latest move by Microsoft into providing on-line information. It already operates a news service, MSN (1) (MicroSoft Network) A family of Internet-based services from Microsoft, which includes a search engine, e-mail (Hotmail), instant messaging (Windows Live Messaging) and a general-purpose portal with news, information and shopping (MSN Directory). News, is beginning a cable news channel with NBC NBC in full National Broadcasting Co. Major U.S. commercial broadcasting company. It was formed in 1926 by RCA Corp., General Electric Co. Microsoft stirred attention when it hired Kinsley - former editor of The New Republic and co-host of CNN's ``Crossfire'' - to edit the magazine. Slate is Microsoft's highest-profile experiment in on-line media, where few people are making money. For Microsoft, the project is a way for it to derive recurring revenue from customers, not just on the few occasions they buy Microsoft programs. Among the contributors to the first issue are the Atlantic Monthly's Nicholas Lemann and Cullen Murphy, and Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney. For those who like their magazines in a more traditional format, a monthly print collection of highlights from Slate, called Slate on Paper, will be available at Starbucks Coffee Co. stores for $3. In addition, some Slate features will be reprinted in Time magazine. Kinsley's editorial team includes Jack Shafer, former editor of the San Francisco Weekly; Jodie Allen, former editor of the Washington Post's Sunday Outlook section of opinion and commentary; and Judith Shulevitz, former columnist and deputy editor of New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States.
