MICRODYNE BROADENS ETHERNET ADAPTER FAMILY WITH
 NOVELL NE2000PLUS3 THREE-WAY ETHERNET ADAPTERS
DALLAS, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Microdyne Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCDY), in cooperation with Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: NOVL), introduced the Novell NE2000plus3 by Microdyne, a versatile 16-bit Ethernet adapter that represents the first of the two companies' cooperatively developed "next generation" adapters. The "plus3" designation indicates that the adapter supports all three types of physical interfaces for Ethernet: 10Base-T (unshielded twisted pair), 10Base-5 (thicknet), and 10Base-2 (thinnet).
In addition to the convenience of a choice of three physical interfaces, the NE2000plus3 may be configured completely under software control. This important feature allows users to set or change parameters on the adapter without the necessity of opening the computer to alter switch settings.
The new Novell NE2000plus3 is offered by Microdyne as the first new-generation Ethernet product produced as a result of an agreement between Novell and Microdyne, under which Microdyne is manufacturing and marketing the Novell NE line of Ethernet adapters. The NE2000plus3 is based on National Semiconductor's new AT/LANTIC chip, an integrated single-chip controller. Shipments of the NE2000plus3 are planned for December.
In a related announcement, Microdyne said that initial volume shipments of the Novell NE1000, NE2000, and NE2000T Ethernet Adapters by Microdyne, which are based on the National Semiconductor SNIC and ST-NIC chips, will begin this month.
"Our new NE2000plus3 offers the high-value features our customers have been requesting, including jumperless configuration and all three physical media," commented Philip T. Cunningham, chairman and president of Microdyne. "As a result of our long-standing relationship with Novell, Microdyne has recently broadened its product line to include not only the next generation NE2000plus3 but also the popular Novell NE1000/2000 Ethernet adapters and the new Novell NTR line of Token Ring adapters. All of them are backed by Microdyne's lifetime warranty and free telephone technical support. The benefit for our customers is trouble-free operation and ever- improving price/performance."
"Microdyne's new Novell NE2000plus3, based on National's new high-performance AT/LANTIC chip, is good news for end users looking for high quality, high performance LAN solutions with the highest assurance of Novell compatibility and support," said Mike Sodegren, worldwide marketing director of the LAN Division for National Semiconductor.
The NE2000plus3 provides 100 percent software compatibility with Novell's industry-standard NE2000. As with all adapters in the Novell-NE by Microdyne family, the NE2000plus3 will ship with Novell- developed drivers that provide full support for NetWare 2.2, 3.11 and NetWare Lite.
An Eight-Year Relationship Between Microdyne and Novell
Microdyne and Novell have established a series of contractual relationships over an eight-year period. Microdyne (and its predecessor company, Federal Technology Corporation) provided Novell hardware and software solutions as early as 1984. As a result of technology transfer agreements between Novell and Microdyne, Microdyne assumed the responsibility to manufacture, market and enhance a number of product lines that originated at Novell.
During the past year, Microdyne has broadened its line of Novell offerings through additional agreements with Novell. Products include the NetWare Access Server and NetWare Asynchronous Communications Server by Microdyne, which provide dial-in/dial-out LAN access; connectivity products for SAA, SNA, 3270, and X.25; and the widely-used Novell NE1000, NE2000, and NE2000T line of Ethernet adapters.
Headquartered in Alexandria, Va., Microdyne Corporation develops, manufactures and markets data communications and network connectivity products. The company also provides systems integration, telemetry products and support services for manufacturers.
