MICROCOM ANNOUNCES CARBON COPY FOR DOS 6.1; NEW INSTALLATION PROGRAM, ENHANCED DOCUMENTATION SPEED USER PRODUCTIVITY; EXTRA VALUE PACKAGING
NORWOOD, Mass., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Microcom, Inc., (NASDAQ: MNPI) the leader in remote access and management solutions for PCs, today announced Carbon Copy for DOS 6.1 the latest version of its market-leading remote control software. Designed to increase user productivity, Carbon Copy for DOS 6.1 now features an enhanced installation program that cuts installation time by 60 percent. Carbon Copy for DOS 6.1 users, particularly those in technical support roles, will greatly benefit from substantially enhanced user documentation which provides faster access to crucial information.
"By listening carefully to our large installed base of Carbon Copy for DOS users, we learned that they want better integration of the asynchronous and LAN set-up procedures," said Bill Andrews, Microcom vice president of sales and marketing communications. "As a result, our new installation lets users install both the network and modem modules in one easy step."
In addition to making Carbon Copy for DOS 6.1 easier to use, Microcom makes PCs safer. While supplies last, a free copy of Virex for the PC virus detection program is bundled with Carbon Copy for DOS 6.1. The detection program alerts the user to the presence of viruses known at this time.
For ongoing anti-virus protection, a coupon is provided for a free copy of the complete Virex for the PC software, including detection, treatment and prevention (a $99.95 value) with the purchase of a Virex quarterly update subscription ($75 annually). Virex for the PC recently received a top performance rating from the National Computer Security Association (NCSA).
The most significant enhancement in Carbon Copy for DOS 6.1 is closer integration of LAN and asynchronous capabilities. In the past, separate programs were required to install the LAN and asynchronous modules. With release 6.1, a single program enables users to install Carbon Copy for DOS to work over LANs modems or both.
Ease-of-use is taken one step further with simplified user documentation. Instead of three separate manuals for the LAN, asynchronous and terminal emulation modules, the LAN and asynchronous functions are now combined into one manual. Terminal emulation is covered in a separate manual. Special color-coding makes it easier for users to quickly access crucial information.
Microcom will begin shipping Carbon Copy for DOS 6.1 in a newly designed package to its network of distributors and resellers in Sept. 1992. List price continues to be only $199 for the package containing the guest and host programs for communication via modems plus an unlimited license for all PCs on a LAN. Microcom offers several upgrade programs to Carbon Copy for DOS 6.1. Current Carbon Copy users can upgrade from release 6.0 for $29, release 5.22 to 6.1 for $49; and from all releases earlier than 5.22 for $69. Users of version 6.0 can obtain a free upgrade to 6.1 from Microcom's bulletin board service (617-551-1888).
