MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY DEBUTS FIRST 512 KBIT I2C SERIAL EEPROM IN 8-LEAD SOIC PACKAGE.Microchip Technology MCHP Microchip Technologies (stock symbol) MCHP Micro-sized Combined Heat and Power (American Honda Motor Co. & Climate Energy, LLC) MCHP Maine Community Heritage Project ) has announced an industry first by offering a 512 Kbit I2C I2C Inter-Integrated Circuit I2C Intelligent Interface Controller I2C Intelligent Controller serial EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM) A rewritable memory chip that holds its content without power. Although EEPROMs spawned flash memory, EEPROMs are byte addressable at the write level, whereas flash chips must erase a block of bytes before rewriting. that fits into a standard 8-lead SOIC (Small Outline IC) A small-dimension, plastic, rectangular, surface mount chip package that uses gull-wing pins extending outward. See gull-wing lead, SOJ and chip package. (.208) package. The 24LC515 is part of a family of devices that gives Microchip the ability to offer a higher-density EEPROM device in one of the most common packages used in applications today. Users of the company's current 256 Kbit devices now have a migratable upgrade path to higher-density EEPROMs while remaining in the same package. Replacing 256 Kbit devices with half the number of the higher-density memory 512 Kbit devices in an application lowers costs and increases available board space in a design. The 24LC515 device has a page-write capability of up to 64 bytes of data and is capable of random reads up to the 512 Kbit boundary and sequential reads within each of its 256 Kbit blocks. Functional address lines allow up to four devices on the same bus, for up to 2 megabits total address space. Additional features include a clock rate of 400 KHz, an operating voltage of 1.8V-5.5V, and a temperature range of -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius. A faster version of this chip (24FC515) is capable of operating at a bus speed of 1 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. over the same temperature range. Advanced, low-power applications targeted for the 24LC515 device include cell phones, set-top boxes, pagers and data acquisition systems. Each of these markets requires high-density, non-volatile memory for data storage. Prices in 10,000-unit quantities is $2.10 each for the 24LC515 device and $2.25 each for the 24FC515 device. Samples are available now and volume production is scheduled for mid-July 2001.
