An Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award candidate, Long, the team's co-captain, was named the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year after the Wolverines outscored their opponents 362-175 en route to an 11-1 record and a No.3 ranking in the BCS (1) (The British Computer Society, Swindon, Wiltshire, England, www.bcs.org) The chartered body for information technology professionals in the U.K., founded in 1957. .

A third-year starter out of Lapeer East High School in Michigan, Long, who moved from right tackle to left tackle this season, is in charge of getting his teammates focused on their assignments.

``I just try to come out in the run game and just maul people,'' Long said. And if I can get them on the ground, I'll put them on the ground and try to open up some holes. I want to be dominant in the run game.''

After a 7-5 season, in which its running game gained 1,939 yards, Michigan churned out 2,270 yards this season.

``We didn't have the type of year we wanted last year, and we worked very hard as an offensive line to get the running game back, during the offseason, and that was one of our strong points,'' Long said. ``Throughout the season, we stayed strong and opened up holes, and it was important for us to protect Chad.''

With Long and his linemates doing the dirty work, Henne was given enough protection to throw for 2,199yards and 20 touchdowns.

in a left tackle, and the talent,'' Henne said of Long. ``He's a great player, and I'm just glad that he's protecting my back side. ``As a leader, he gets everybody together on the offensive line and really gets guys going at practice. For me, Jake's just a great guy to be one there because he understands what his task is.''
