MICHIGAN MANAGED HEALTH CARE CORPORATIONS ANNOUNCE LETTER OF INTENT TO FORM JOINT VENTURE

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- On Monday, Aug. 2, four Michigan based managed health care corporations finalized a letter of intent to form a joint venture to participate in building a statewide managed health care network. The parties to the agreement are: SelectCare, Inc., of Troy, Mich., Priority Health Managed Benefits, Inc., of Grand Rapids, IBA Health and Life Assurance Co., of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Michigan Integrated Delivery Network, Inc. (MIDNET), a subsidiary of VHA Michigan, also of Grand Rapids.
The joint venture will offer multiple site employers a wide spectrum of insured and self-funded products tied to each company's locally based medical management and administrative systems. "Our larger, multiple site employers are asking for a cost effective program offering coordinated administrative services and uniform benefits to be made available on a statewide basis," said Vic Turvey, president of Priority Health Managed Benefits, Inc. and chairman of the joint venture committee. Added Mark Bertolini, president of SelectCare, Inc., "Our product design will go beyond the volume discounting arrangements that many PPOs offer today. The latest managed care technologies will be made available to providers who will accept financial risk in managing the cost and quality aspects of their patients' care."
MIDNET's role will focus on the development of new market areas that are currently underserved by managed care companies today. Mike Wood, president of MIDNET, said, "The common link between these four entities is that each is owned by a VHA member hospital. However, as the joint venture expands its provider network, non-VHA hospitals and additional HMOs may also join the network."
Added Larry O'Brien, president of IBA, "What we are creating initially is the core of a system which will combine the geographical coverage of a statewide company with the service levels and provider support of the best regional managed care companies."
IBA, SelectCare and Priority Health together provide health coverage to nearly 500,000 Michigan residents. Initial product offerings will commence first quarter 1994. Inquiries may be directed to any of the principals at their home office locations.
