MICHIGAN BELL SLASHES SIGN-UP CHARGES

 MICHIGAN BELL SLASHES SIGN-UP CHARGES
 DETROIT, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan Bell for a limited time is

slashing its sign-up charges for Touch-Tone, Multi-Ring and four Custom Calling services beginning March 2.
 Through April 19, the new one-time order charge for any of these services will be $7.50 instead of the current charge of $30.50 and will apply to residence and business customers.
 "This reduction should make Touch-Tone, Multi-Ring and Custom Calling features more attractive to customers who want the services but haven't ordered them because of the higher service charge," said Laird Spencer, director of marketing and business development for Michigan Bell.
 "The service order charge is just $7.50 whether a customer wants one, three, or all of the services," he added. "We hope customers will take advantage of the offer to order all the features they may have been wanting."
 Multi-Ring service allows up to three different telephone numbers to ring on a single telephone. Each phone number rings in a distinctive pattern, and each number also has a distinctive tone to signal Call Waiting, if that service is ordered.
 The Custom Calling services available under the special offer include:
 -- Call Forwarding, which automatically transfers calls to another number;
 -- Call Waiting, which, during a call, signals that there's another call waiting;
 -- Three-Way Calling, which allows the addition of a third party to a two-way telephone conversation; and
 -- Speed Calling, which enables a customer to dial frequently called numbers by using only one or two digits. (The service is available two ways, with a capacity of storing up to eight or up to 30 numbers.)
 In addition to the start-up charge, each of the services also requires a monthly fee ranging from $2.30 to $5 for residence customers and $3.74 to $5.91 for business customers.
 Spencer said Michigan Bell will be studying market reaction to the reduced order charge with an eye toward making the reduction permanent.
