MICHIGAN BELL ANNOUNCES AMERITECH SUPERSCHOOL COMPETITION

 DETROIT, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan Bell has mailed applications to more than 4,000 public and private schools in the state announcing details of a $150,000 awards competition.
 Called the Ameritech SuperSchool competition, the program is part of an initiative to award $750,000 to schools in five states (Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin) served by Ameritech Bell companies.
 The competition is designed to encourage schools to find creative and innovative ways to use electronic communication to improve the quality of education.
 Schools are being invited to describe their plans to use network- based telecommunication technology to improve education. Both public and private schools at kindergarten, elementary and secondary levels are eligible for the grants.
 At least three grants will be awarded in each of Ameritech's five states for the 1993-94 school year. A panel of education experts will select the winners and determine the size of the grants. Applications must be postmarked no later than Feb. 17. Winners will be announced in May.
 Among the criteria judges will consider are whether the project:
 -- Provides a major impact on traditional instructional or administrative methods;
 -- Enhances learning objectives by creative use of technology;
 -- Includes a network-based, interactive use of technology; and
 -- Increases student motivation and is replicable in other school settings.
 Two toll-free telephone numbers are being provided for questions concerning the Ameritech SuperSchool competition: 1-800-552-1296 and 1-800-551-1296.
 Ameritech is the Chicago-based parent of the Bell companies serving Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, as well as several other information-related subsidiaries, both foreign and domestic, providing mobile communications, directory publishing, audiotex services, lease financing and voice messaging.
