MICHAEL P.W. STONE, FORMER SECRETARY OF ARMY, NAMED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF BEI ELECTRONICS, INC.
SAN FRANCISCO, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- BEI Electronics, Inc. (NASDAQ: BEII) announced today that Michael P.W. Stone, former Secretary of the Army, has been named to an additional seat on BEI's board of directors, according to Charles Crocker, chairman of the board. "We are very pleased to have such a distinguished individual join our board," Crocker said. "We expect to benefit from his unique combination of government and industry experience." Stone was Secretary of the Army from 1989 through 1993. Prior to 1989, he was Undersecretary of the Army and served as Army acquisition executive. He also performed the duties of Undersecretary of Defense for acquisition during 1989. From 1991 through 1992, Stone was responsible directly to the Secretary of Defense for the U.S. civil reconstruction program in Kuwait. Also, from October 1990 to January 1993, he was chairman of the board of the Panama Canal Commission, the organization responsible for supervising the operation of the Canal. Stone began his career with the army in 1986, when he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Army for Financial Management. His first government position was in July 1982 when he joined the Agency for International Development (AID) as director of the U.S. mission in Cairo, Egypt, Stone's responsibilities there included the implementation of a package of 65 major projects, AID's largest administered program. Prior to government service, Stone was a founding partner of Sterling International, a San Francisco-based marketing and manufacturing paper company operating worldwide between 1960 and 1982, he was both a vice president of Sterling and president of several of its subsidiaries. Previously, he held various executive positions with Utah International, McKinsey & Company,and Howard Rotavator Company. Stone received a B.A. degree from Yale University in 1948 and later studied at New York University Law School. During World War II he served as a fighter pilot with the British Royal Navy. He is married to the former Ann Donogh of Seattle. They have two married sons, Prescott and Matthew. He resides in San Francisco.
