MGM MOURNS THE PASSING OF MARKETING

CULVER CITY, Calif., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was shocked and saddened yesterday (5/10/93) by the news of executive vice president of Worldwide Marketing Robert Dingilian's untimely death yesterday morning.
A highly-regarded industry veteran, Dingilian served as a top marketing executive at several major studios during his 40-year career, bringing his knowledge and expertise to literally hundreds of feature film campaigns.
He began his career at the Association of Motion Picture & Television Producers, serving as Head of Public Affairs until 1968. He was then partnered with David Gershenson for seven years in the public relations firm Gershenson & Dingilian Associates.
In 1976, Dingilian joined 20th Century Fox Film Corp., eventually becoming Worldwide vice president of Publicity and Promotion under Alan Ladd Jr. During his tenure there he contributed to the successful campaigns for such hits as "Star Wars," "The Turning Point," "Julia," "Alien," and "All That Jazz." He left 20th Century Fox in 1980 to rejoin Ladd at The Ladd Co. as vice president of Advertising, Publicity and Promotion working on such acclaimed films as "Chariots of Fire," "The Right Stuff," "Blade Runner," and "Body Heat."
Leaving The Ladd Co.in 1984, Dingilian moved to Columbia Pictures, where he served as executive vice president of Worldwide Marketing until 1988. During that time he helped shape the campaigns for such successes as "Jagged Edge," "La Bamba," "White Nights," and "The Last Emperor." He then became president of International Creative Associates, an independent marketing firm, handling such critically lauded films as "My Left Foot," "The Grifters," "Mr. and Mrs. Bridge," including the successful Oscar campaign for the first.
Dingilian joined MGM in 1991, reuniting him again with MGM Co- Chairman Ladd. For the last two years he had been executive vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
He also served as a governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for three years from 1989 to 1992.
"Throughout his career, Bob Dingilian was not only a brilliantly talented leader in the field of marketing, but remained a gentleman in the truest sense of the word," commented longtime associate Ashley Boone, MGM executive vice president. "He will be remembered as one of the most liked and admired men in the industry ... because he cared about people."
Dingilian is survived by his wife Martha (Muffett) Kaufman Dingilian and his four children, Susan, Tim, Erin and Christopher.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. at the Writers Guild of America, 135 S. Doheny Dr., Beverly Hills, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, Dingilian's family has requested that donations be held for a foundation to be established in his name.
