MGM GRAND, BALLY'S ANNOUNCE MONORAIL PROJECT

LAS VEGAS, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- With an eye toward helping alleviate traffic congestion on Las Vegas Boulevard, the MGM Grand Hotel, Casino & Theme Park and Bally's Las Vegas announced Tuesday a joint venture to build a one-mile monorail linking the two properties.
Construction on the $15 million project is expected to begin subsequent to approval of governmental authorities. It will take approximately 15 months to build the monorail system.
"It is important for private industry and government entities to work toward providing alternative transportation modes for future Las Vegas visitors," said Robert Maxey, President and CEO of MGM Grand, Inc. "We hope this route between Bally's and MGM Grand will be the first leg of a high-technology system that will one day link downtown, the Strip, the Convention Center and McCarran Airport."
The monorail will run north and south, along Audrie Street on Bally's property and along an internal boulevard on MGM property. The elevated rail will cross Harmon Avenue, the only public property over which it will pass.
"With Bally's on the Flamingo corner of the Strip, and with MGM on the Tropicana corner, it seemed natural to link the two properties to facilitate the flow of visitors," said Arthur Goldberg, Chairman and CEO of Bally Manufacturing Corp.
At a press conference Tuesday, MGM Grand and Bally's played a computer-animated video of a proposed system by AEG Von Roll Monorail Systems of Switzerland. A similar system currently operates in Sydney, Australia, linking downtown with Darling Harbour.
The electrically powered Bally's-MGM monorail would consist of two six-car trains, one running in each direction. Each air- conditioned car would have a capacity of up to 25 people in seating and standing positions, thus able to accommodate 150 people per trip. The one-mile ride will take about 3 1/2 minutes. The semi-automatic system will include state-of-the-art safety control systems.
Two passenger station platforms, complete with elevators and escalators, will be built -- one near the MGM Grand front entrance on Tropicana Boulevard and one at Bally's on Audrie Street.
The new $1 billion MGM Grand, consisting of the world's largest hotel (5,005 rooms), the world's largest casino (171,500 square feet) and the first full-fledged theme park in Nevada (12 major attractions and eight themed streets), is scheduled to open in early 1994. The new project is expected to attract 18 million annual visitors.
MGM Grand, Inc. (MGG) and Bally Manufacturing Corp. (BLY) are both public companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
