MFS PLANS FIBER OPTIC NETWORK IN LONDON; FILES TELECOMMUNICATIONS LICENSE APPLICATION

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- MFS Communications Company, Inc. (MFS) today said that it has formed MFS Communications, Ltd., a new international service subsidiary that will be headquartered in London. Colin Williams, formerly a senior executive of British Telecom (BT), has been named president, chief executive officer and a director of MFS Communications, Ltd.
It was also announced that MFS Communications, Ltd. has applied to the United Kingdom's Department of Trade and Industry for a license to operate as a public telecommunications operator in the U.K. Subject to approval of the application, MFS anticipates that MFS Communications, Ltd. will begin offering services to London-based business and government users in Spring 1994. MFS is the first Competitive Access Provider (CAP) to expand its operations abroad.
"As the leading CAP in the U.S., MFS has firmly established itself as a high-quality supplier of telecommunications services to business and government," said Royce J. Holland, president of MFS. "Formation of this new subsidiary presents an exciting opportunity to extend our reputation for quality service internationally and to serve the many international banking, insurance, brokerage and legal firms in London. Extension of our services overseas will also benefit our U.S.-based customers with international requirements."
"As always, MFS' emphasis will be on service reliability, resilience, flexibility, redundancy and customer choice," said Colin Williams, president and CEO of MFS Communications, Ltd. "Initially, we plan to provide switched and dedicated telecommunications services along with broadband data and video services to major corporate customers in London's financial district."
