MFS INAUGURATES FIRST ALL SONET, ALL FIBER OPTIC NETWORK IN ATLANTA

ATLANTA, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- MFS Telecom, Inc., a subsidiary of MFS Communications Company, Inc. (MFS), officially opened its Network Operations Centers today with an "open house" celebration for metropolitan Atlanta business and government users. In addition, the company announced that work on its 66 route mile Atlanta fiber optic network is complete and that the network is the first all Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) in Atlanta.
SONET is an underlying transport standard for fiber optics-based communications networks that allows the networks to connect to any manufacturer's transmission equipment. Previously, the transmission equipment on either end of a fiber connection had to be from the same manufacturer. This not only limited the services that fiber optic-based telecommunications service providers -- such as MFS Telecom -- could offer, but made it more difficult to configure and manage a network.
"As a standard, where none existed before, SONET represents the fiber transport architecture of the future," said Royce Holland, MFS president. "Incorporating SONET on our network will allow us to develop and offer additional innovative services and insures we will be able to meet our customers' needs today and tomorrow."
With a SONET-based network, MFS Telecom is able to offer customers, with or without their own equipment, a universal high-speed connection ranging from 51.84 Megabits per second to 13 Gigabits per second. Most of the connections into and out of a SONET platform will continue to be the same DS-1 and DS-3 services now offered by MFS Telecom. However, customers wishing to deploy their own SONET networks will now be able to easily interconnect with MFS Telecom.
Additionally, the network provides customers access to the services of another MFS affiliate, MFS Datanet, Inc. Using MFS Datanet's High- speed LAN (Local Area Network) Interconnection services, Atlanta-area businesses with high-speed LAN interconnection requirements can now communicate between sites across the street, city or country at native LAN speeds.
The open house celebration will be highlighted by some service displays and demonstrations. Leading the MFS Telecom Atlanta team are Larissa Herda, director of city sales, and Ted Kuykendall, operations manager.
Offering competitive access and local private line services to business and government customers, MFS Telecom uses a 100 percent digital fiber optic network, which features route diversity, redundant electronics and around-the-clock monitoring.
The MFS Telecom network in Atlanta will initially serve 54 buildings in the downtown, midtown, Buckhead and Perimeter Center areas. The network will be monitored locally from two city Network Operations Centers as well as from MFS Telecom's Network Operations Control Center in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.
MFS Telecom is an operating company of MFS Communications Company, Inc., which provides solutions for business communications nationwide.
