MEXICO'S DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE TO BE OBSERVED THIS WEEK.

 - will celebrate Las Fiestas Patrias Fiestas Patrias is a Spanish phrase meaning "Patriotic Holidays" or "National Holidays".

A sea of red, white and green - the colors of the Mexican flag - as well as mariachi music and plenty of fancy folkorico dancing are sure to distinguish most of the celebrations.

One of the largest is being held this weekend at Olvera Street and will resume on Sept. 16, the actual anniversary of Mexico's declaration of independence from Spain in 1810.

The Olvera Street fiesta runs from noon until 10 p.m. today and again on Thursday, from noon to 8 p.m., at 845 N. Alameda St., downtown. A variety of musical groups will perform, and the Mexican Cultural Institute will sponsor children's arts and crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts.  workshops.

Along the streets of East Los Angeles, with one of the city's largest concentration of Mexicans, The Mexican Committee of Patriotism will hold its 55th annual parade today, with Supervisor Gloria Molina hosting as grand marshal. The parade begins at 11 a.m. at Lorena and 1st streets and will feature ballet folkorico and other bands representing states throughout Mexico.

On Wednesday, the eve of Mexican Independence Day, the cities of Los Angeles and San Fernando will commemorate the famous El Grito de Independencia, or the cry of independence made by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1810.
