METROID 3 FINALLY TURNS WII LOOSE ON ACTION.Byline: REDMOND CAROLIPIO >LA.COM (1) (Computer Output Microfilm) Creating microfilm or microfiche from the computer. Good space epics have a few things in common -- the wonder of exploring new worlds, encountering odd lifeforms, and of course, cool tech. The first-person shooter Metroid Prime (メトロイドプライム 3: Corruption," has all of the above, making it easily one of the coolest pieces of work to grace the drive of the Nintendo Wii. Since E3, the Wii has been pilloried by irate hard-core gamers who believe that Nintendo has shunned them to accommodate the alpha-mom demographic. However, "Corruption" manages to dispel that notion within the first hour of gameplay. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed) "Don't know the trade." Not only does the Wii remote control your aim, it's also used for more complex work, like opening sophisticated door locks (twisting and pushing) or pumping fuel into dormant machinery. The most satisfying acts, however, are reserved for the nunchuk. The heroine, Samus Aran, features an upgradable battle suit. One of the upgrades is a grappling lasso lasso (lăs`ō, lăs `), light, strong rope, usually with a smooth, hard finish, made of a fine quality of hemp or nylon. that you can literally toss out and
use to pull things -- like the shields from the arms or your enemies.
The feeling is gameplay gold.
The Wii often gets knocked for lacking the graphical horsepower of its contemporaries, the 360 and the PS3. But the visuals in "Corruption" are no joke. Whether you're traversing the canyons of a barren world or dueling with intergalactic space pirates, the graphics emulate that vintage sci-fi feel. It's not "Gears," but anyone who wants "Gears" graphics out of a Wii is trying too hard. I liked some of the more subtle visual tweaks. When you go into "scan" mode, you can see Samus' eyes reflected in her visor, following the aiming sight. Very cool. There are other enjoyable features in this chapter of Metroid. You eventually get access to "hypermode," which adds supreme death-dealing power to your weapons, but also drains energy from the battle suit. I was also taken in by the game's sense of pacing. Exploration has always been a part of the Metroid mythos my·thos n. pl. my·thoi 1. Myth. 2. Mythology. 3. The boss battles are perhaps the most fun part of the game. One memorable confrontation has you fighting a monster while plummeting down a large tunnel -- there's even a distance counter at the bottom of the screen, which means you have to kill this thing quickly. Paranoia has set in. I scan everything now. But even with that, Wii owners will find that Metroid Prime3: Corruption is the big-time action game they've been awaiting since the system came out. This is a classic franchise that still has a lot of life left.
