METRO-OPTIX DELIVERS WIDEBAND CROSS-CONNECT AND DS3 TEST ACCESS FUNCTIONALITY.

Metro-Optix, creators of CityStream bandwidth manager Software that can prioritize communications by allowing high-priority traffic to use more available bandwidth in the network than lower-priority data. For example, real time video can be given more bandwidth than file transfers.  for optical edge TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) A technology that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed transmission. , ATM, IP and MPLS (1) (MultiProtocol Lambda Switching) The earlier name for GMPLS. See GMPLS.

services, has announced general availability of release 2.0 of CityStream 5000, which features wideband cross-connect functionality.

With this release, Metro-Optix is re-establishing the boundary limits for carriers for VT 1.5 circuits, with 10,752 by 10,752 switching capacity, at the "edge" to eliminate the need for backhauling traffic to a central office for processing. This provides important economic benefits, as real estate and operating costs are much higher in a "CO" than at the edge of the network.

This latest release integrates wideband TDM cross-connect functionality including DS3 test access to an already versatile CityStream platform which also offers ATM service access multiplexer and ATM switch (announced in March 2002) functionality combined with Next Generation SONET add/drop multiplexer capabilities. The wideband cross-connect functionality has been trialed with several leading service providers and is now generally available and shipping for customer field installations.

"Having wideband cross-connect capability addresses a critical market requirement that exists today and we believe it will help us to increase traction across the spectrum of metro carriers," said Dave Orr, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , Metro-Optix. "Offering cross connect at the VT level also takes us one step closer to creating an environment where the intelligence of cross connects, ATM switches and IP routers resides at the edge of the network, which will save carriers significant capital and operating expense Operating Expense

The latest version of CityStream supports popular ATM Services -- CBR (1) (Computer-Based Reference) Reference materials accessible by computer in order to help people do their jobs quicker. For example, this database on disk!

(2) (Constant Bit Rate) A uniform transmission rate.
, UBR (Unspecified Bit Rate) An asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) level of service that does not guarantee available bandwidth. It is very efficient, but not used for critical data. , and VBRrt (constant, unspecified and real time variable bit rates) -- and can support any combination of clear channel DS3 and ATM DS3 in the same multi-port DS3 module. This takes Metro-Optix one step closer to creating a totally flexible, "penalty-free" environment for carriers as they migrate from a predominantly voice-based network to one incorporating cell- and packet-based data services. Metro-Optix calls this "protocol agility."

"The wideband cross-connect functionality available on the CityStream optical edge device will enable carriers to push switching and grooming closer to the edge, where these functions can be performed more economically," said Ron Kline, senior analyst at RHK RHK Ratahallintokeskus (Finnish: Finnish Rail Administration)

. "Incorporating wideband cross-connect functionality into the same network element as multiple SONET ADMs offers compelling savings in terms of floor space, power, equipment and operational costs. Integrated ADM/cross-connect capabilities available on optical edge devices reduce backhaul requirements between the edge and the core allowing carriers to cap their investment in large core wideband cross-connects."

Jointly headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif. and Allen, Texas, Metro-Optix is a privately held, optical networking equipment provider that is pioneering a new generation of telecommunications infrastructure for metropolitan networks. Metro-Optix is developing solutions that enable carriers to effectively transition from traditional circuit-based services to high-performance cell and packet-based services.
