METAL CONTAINER ANNOUNCES CAN MANUFACTURING PLANT IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

ST. LOUIS, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Metal Container Corp., the can manufacturing subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch Companies Inc. (NYSE: BUD), plans to build a new beverage can manufacturing plant in Riverside County, Calif.
The new facility will be located in the Mira Loma Commerce Center. Construction is scheduled to begin in August, with operations expected to begin in early 1995.
The new plant will be one of the most technologically advanced of its kind in the world. It will have three high-speed can lines.
"We are delighted to be able to make this investment to better serve our customers in Southern California," said Barry H. Beracha, chairman and chief executive officer of Metal Container Corp., and vice president and group executive for the parent company. "This new plant will enable our company to expand services to the Anheuser-Busch brewery in Van Nuys, California."
In addition to supplying cans to soft drink customers at several locations, Metal Container Corp. currently supplies approximately 40 percent of the Van Nuys brewery's needs from its existing facility in Carson, Calif. The Carson facility will be closed after the new plant begins production in 1995. Most of the existing employees will be offered jobs at the new location.
The Mira Loma Commerce Center was selected as the site for the new can plant after an examination of more than 80 locations in Southern California, Beracha said.
"We chose Riverside County because of its proximity to our customers and the support we received from Riverside County and the state of California," he said. "Riverside County and California state officials were extremely helpful in bringing the project to this point."
The new plant will be Metal Container's second in Riverside: the company has operated a lid-making plant in the community since 1988. Metal Container's existing presence in Riverside and the excellent relationship the company enjoys with residents and the business community there were also factors in the decision, Beracha said.
"We are extremely pleased with Metal Container Corporation's decision to choose Riverside as a location for this very significant investment," said Melba Dunlap, Riverside County supervisor. "We appreciate the company's commitment to establish a manufacturing plant using the most advanced technology in the industry and to bring high quality jobs here."
Metal Container Corp., headquartered in St. Louis, is one of the leading aluminum beverage container manufacturers in the United States. Metal Container Corp. will start up its eleventh plant in Rome, Ga., later this year. With its 10 existing can and lid plants in the United States, Metal Container produced more than 14 billion cans and 16 billion lids in 1992.
In addition to supplying the majority of its output to Anheuser- Busch Inc., Metal Container has established commercial partnerships with soft drink bottlers throughout the United States. The company also sells in export markets.
