MESA ENVIRONMENTAL GAINS CERTIFICATION FOR GEM NATURAL GAS VEHICLE CONVERSION EQUIPMENT

FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- MESA Environmental announced today that its new natural gas vehicle conversion equipment has been certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the Colorado Department of Health (CDoH) for use in selected widely-used fleet vehicles.
MESA Environmental's state-of-the-art conversion equipment will be marketed beginning in early 1994 under the name of GEM(TM) -- for Gas Engine Management.
CARB certification for GEM is generally applicable to all 1993 and older model-year light-duty trucks equipped with General Motors 5.7-, 2.5-, or 2.2-liter gasoline engines.
The GEM system incorporates a control strategy that can be easily applied to almost any gasoline engine. MESA Environmental engineers have developed engine-specific calibrations for vehicles representing over 60 percent of next year's projected natural gas vehicle conversions. These calibrations, as required by proposed EPA standards, are non-adjustable in the field leading to more reliable performance and emission results as well as reduced installation time.
GEM emission test results at four independent laboratories in Texas, California and Colorado have shown significant improvement over gasoline. As new calibrations are finalized, applications will be made to extend MESA Environmental's CARB certification to cover additional engine families.
Fort Worth-based MESA Environmental is a subsidiary of Dallas-based MESA Inc., one of the nation's largest independent natural gas producers. MESA's chairman, Boone Pickens, currently serves as chairman of the Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition.
The GEM system is the result of a year-long research and development effort at MESA Environmental spearheaded by Steve King, MESA Environmental's vice president of engineering. King is the former manager of engine research at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio.
