MERRIAM-WEBSTER OFFERS $10,000 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP; PUBLISHER TEAMS
WITH OVER 2,500 BOOKSELLERS IN RETAILER/CONSUMER PROMOTION
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Merriam-Webster, whose dictionaries and reference books have been helping students with their work for 150 years, is extending its impact on education with a different kind of assistance: a $10,000 college scholarship.
Merriam-Webster's College Scholarship Sweepstakes(TM) offers a grand prize of a $10,000 scholarship and will also award to more than 100 other students a total of $10,000 in additional prizes, including a $5,000 college scholarship, sets of Encyclopaedia Britannica, and copies of America's best-selling desk dictionary, Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary.
According to Joseph J. Esposito, president and publisher of Merriam- Webster, "Given the increasingly complex and competitive world of the 1990s, a college education has never been more valuable. Unfortunately, it has also never been more costly. In awarding these scholarships and prizes, Merriam-Webster hopes to provide some solid footing to help the winners begin to realize their ambitions -- and their dreams."
Entering Merriam-Webster's College Scholarship Sweepstakes(TM) is easy. Between August 15, 1992 and September 15, 1992 anyone visiting a participating bookstore will find a point-of-purchase inflatable Merriam-Webster character hovering near a stack of Webster's Ninth New Collegiate dictionaries and a pad of entry forms. The scholarship hopeful simply fills out his or her name and address on the entry form and mails it to the sweepstakes coordinator. A random drawing to be held in mid-December will determine the winners. No purchase is necessary.
Should the grand-prize winner name his or her favorite bookseller in the space provided on the entry form, Merriam-Webster will donate a $1,000 retail-value assortment of reference books to the Literacy Volunteers of America in the bookseller's name.
More than 2,500 booksellers, including Waldenbooks, Crown Books and many independent dealers nationwide, are taking part in Merriam- Webster's College Scholarship Sweepstakes(TM). This first-time endeavor is a cooperative effort of bookseller and publisher that aims to create educational opportunity and fulfillment by helping a few of America's students to get started on a path to lifetime success.
