MERL and Mechanics Software of Austin, TX, are collaborating to develop a system of computer software for fatigue life calculations of reinforced elastomer components. They will develop a combination of fracture mechanics and finite element analysis techniques. Every step of the software development will be subjected to detailed laboratory validation. A set of benchmark elastomer compounds will be characterized in detail for fatigue behavior to provide a database for this purpose. The three-year project is still open to new participants. Interested persons should contact Dr. Andrew Stevenson at MERL, Tamworth Road, Hertford, SG13 7DG, England. Tel.: 44 (0)992 500120.
