MERCURY RECORDS TO SPONSOR SERIES OF PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS TO
HEIGHTEN PUBLIC AWARENESS ON GAY AND LESBIAN RIGHTS
NEW YORK, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercury Records, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation/New York (GLAAD) and the Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) are pleased to announce that Mercury Records will sponsor a series of public service announcements in conjunction with both organizations aimed at educating the public about lesbian and gay rights and denouncing anti-gay violence.
Two years ago Jamaican reggae artist Buju Banton recorded "Boom Bye Bye," a record which has been criticized for advocating anti-gay violence, on the independent Jamaican label Shang Records. Last month, Mercury Records signed Buju Banton without any knowledge of this recording, which was subsequently re-released by VP Records in Jamaica, Queens.
Though the direction of the material Mr. Banton is working on for Mercury Records is in no way similar to "Boom Bye Bye," Mercury Records has taken the opportunity to assert that it does not condone prejudice or violence against anyone and that they abhor the increasing number of attacks on lesbian and gay men. In examining ways to address this problem, Mercury Records has joined with GLAAD and GMAD to produce these public service announcements, which will air on local New York radio stations beginning next month.
