MERCEDES TO RECALL 400E MODEL

 MERCEDES TO RECALL 400E MODEL
 MONTVALE, N.J., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz of North

America announced today that it is initiating a voluntary recall of 805 vehicles to inspect and possibly replace a hydraulic line. The recall involves only the 1992 mid-size 400E model equipped with ASR traction control, with fewer than 10 percent of these vehicles projected to have the problem.
In these vehicles, a plastic line for the ASR hydraulic unit may be misrouted so that it comes too close to an electrical pre-resistor for the auxiliary cooling fan. If the line is misrouted, it can be melted by the heat of the pre-resistor, allowing hydraulic fluid to leak on the pre-resistor and possibly ignite. If the fluid ignites, a vehicle fire can result. Until vehicles can be inspected, owners are being urged to operate their cars with the air conditioning off, so that no power flows to the pre-resistor.
Owners of all affected vehicles were alerted by mailgram over the weekend and will receive a more detailed letter this week. Mercedes- Benz dealers are calling owners to arrange for inspection of the hydraulic line and replacement if necessary without charge. Dealers may be able to have the 10-minute inspection performed at the owner's home or office, if that is more convenient for the customer.
