MERCEDES ROAD RALLY TOURING NORTH FLORIDA

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- More than fifty vintage and classic Mercedes-Benz automobiles from around the country will be tooling around town as the first annual Star-O-Rama Road Rally and Concours d'Elegance competition takes place February 25-27 in Jacksonville.
Sponsored by the Mercedes-Benz Club of America and Mercedes-Benz of North America, the three-day event includes technical education classes for restoring a car's originality and a special tour of the importer's Vehicle Preparation Center for Mercedes Club members. But most attention and head turning will be on the Road Rally and Concours d'Elegance competition where the public is invited to enter their own Mercedes and to view the classics.
"The word is getting out about vintage touring events," said Bob Crolic, southern region vice president for MBNA. "These events provide owners of vintage cars, many of whom are not involved in vintage racing, with an opportunity to enjoy their cars on the open roads."
The Road Rally event begins Saturday, Feb. 26, at noon from the MBNA headquarters in Baymeadows. The secret route includes a time/regularity trial, the object of which is to maintain a preselected average speed between checkpoints. Each car is awarded a certain number of points to start with, and a one-point penalty is assessed for each second variation from the assigned speed. Also, there are point penalties assigned for traffic citations and for stopping within the 100-meter area before the final checkpoint on each stage.
The public is invited to the sendoff for the Road Rally on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the MBNA headquarters on 8813 Western Way.
The following day, classic Mercedes owners will compete for honors in the Concours d'Elegance, a judging competition based on a vehicle's originality. The event begins Sunday at 9 a.m. with an awards ceremony concluding the weekend activities at 1 p.m. Top honors include the prestigious "Peoples Choice" Award, given to the car with the most votes from spectators.
