Expanding PVCS Platform Capability, MERANT PVCS Dimensions 7.0 Only

Native SCM Product to Support Client/Server and Mainframe

MERANT (London Stock Exchange (LSE):MRN; NASDAQ:MRNT), a global leader in enterprise software products and services, today announced from the SHARE Technology tradeshow in Minneapolis, that MERANT is the first software configuration management (SCM) provider to support both client/server and IBM's OS/390 environment from a single product, with the release of its next generation PVCS Dimensions(TM) 7.0. SHARE is an independent, volunteer-run association providing IBM(R) customers with user-focused education, professional networking, and a forum to influence the Information Technology industry.

The only native SCM solution for both distributed systems and IBM's S/390(R), PVCS Dimensions 7.0 allows organizations to manage all their digital assets through the seamless integration and standardization using a single repository. With OS/390(R) support, PVCS Dimensions 7.0 provides the broadest reach across the industry's leading operating system environments including Windows NT, Windows 95 and Solaris, enabling flexibility and robust development capabilities for management and teams of all sizes deployed worldwide.

"MERANT's support of the OS/390 environment in PVCS Dimensions 7.0 validates its commitment to SCM," said Heather Kahan, Director, zSeries Software Development at IBM. "MERANT complements our efforts with its offerings for OS/390, our highly secure, scalable, high-performance enterprise operating system and S/390 mainframe server."

With PVCS Dimensions 7.0, customers can develop on a wide range of platforms including the mainframe. The latest release of PVCS Dimensions(TM) 7.0 enables enterprise users to reduce costs and increase productivity by effectively maintaining their SCM assets and the cycle of change that exists inevitably in organizations worldwide.

"As organizations integrate their mainframe systems with distributed technologies, they need to improve the coordination and discipline of their change processes to maintain similar levels of service quality," said Jim Duggan, V.P., and Research Director at Gartner Group. "Process automation and cross platform support, like that being introduced here, can play a significant role in reaching mainframe service levels with a heterogeneous system."

While most vendors rely on multiple repositories with an integration component offering two tools and interfaces, the single SCM tool from MERANT, and its' industry-leading PVCS enterprise change management family of products, guarantees a common environment where all digital assets can be managed with the added benefits of ease of use and heightened security. Shared release procedures in both distributed client/server and mainframe platforms, as well as reduced costs of ownership for the enterprise, enables a fluid, team-based approach to effectively managing multiple SCM environments.

"PVCS Dimensions 7.0 will significantly reduce time and resources spent on maintenance and tracking of software changes," said Rakesh Nayak, Software Configuration Management Administrator at Airline Tariff Publishing Company (ATPCO). "Dimensions 7.0's support for the OS/390 environment is an enormous benefit. We fully expect significant benefits for our business, including overall increased productivity."

An additional feature includes standardized enterprise reporting, which occurs across the organization, thereby increasing efficiencies. With expanded capabilities, companies can develop on all platforms, seamlessly integrating existing legacy systems with newer technologies, and ultimately making complex systems simpler for PVCS Dimensions 7.0 customers.

"We're thrilled to be the first vendor offering an SCM solution with a single repository and user interface for the OS/390 environment," said Andrew Weiss, chief technology officer and senior vice president of PVCS product operations at MERANT. "The S/390 is a leading computing platform, for the industry and for our customers. As such, being the first to offer a complete SCM product to meet customers' business demands is an exciting milestone for us."
