MENTOR URETHRIN APPROVED IN CANADA FOR TREATMENT OF URINARY INCONTINENCE

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Mentor Corp. (NASDAQ: MNTR) today reported that the Health and Welfare department of the Canadian government has approved Mentor's Urethrin for the treatment of urinary incontinence in men and women.
Urinary incontinence, or loss of urine control, afflicts millions of older people. The need for incontinence care is a leading cause for placement of the elderly in nursing homes, and billions of dollars are expended each year for managing urinary incontinence.
Urethrin is an injectable implant which supports a weakened urinary sphincter to help prevent involuntary loss of urine. The injection procedure can be performed as an out-patient treatment. It is less invasive and less expensive than alternative surgical procedures which require hospitalization.
"We are very pleased that the Canadian health authorities have approved the marketing of Urethrin in Canada," said Christopher J. Conway, chairman of Mentor Corp. "We expect to introduce the product in the first quarter of next year and look forward to developing other overseas markets as our new manufacturing facility in The Netherlands becomes operational."
Mentor Corp. produces medical and surgical devices for the specialties of urology, ophthalmology, and plastic surgery.
