MENTOR GRAPHICS LEADS ASIC DFT AND $50 MILLION TEST AUTOMATION MARKETS WITH CHECKLOGIC SYSTEMS ACQUISITION

WILSONVILLE, Ore., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Mentor Graphics Corp. (NASDAQ: MENT) announced today it took leadership of the ASIC design-for-test (DFT) market and bolstered its lead in the overall $50 million test automation market by announcing the acquisition of CheckLogic Systems Inc. (San Jose, Calif.). CheckLogic Systems is a developer of world-class automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) point tools. This acquisition strengthens Mentor Graphics' top-down ASIC design technology and provides a DFT solution that can be used in competing design environments. In a related release, Mentor Graphics also announced the availability of DFTAdvisor*, a new test synthesis tool jointly developed by the two companies.
This acquisition evolved out of a partnership announced in 1992 to leverage Mentor Graphics' EDA expertise with CheckLogic Systems' to develop full- and partial-scan, boundary scan, and built-in self-test (BIST) ATPG software development for ASIC, IC and MCM design.
"Test has been the bottleneck in time-to-market," said Ken Neff, a senior analyst with San Jose-based Prime Data. "While front-end tools supplied by top-down design solution vendors provide for relatively quick time-to-market, test holds up the whole process. The solution is to take the front-end data and automatically insert test parameters so that when the design is set, test is also ready. Designers require a more risk-free, automated test solution to make the ultimate deadline -- the right product to market at the right time."
The size of the DFT segment of the EDA market is currently estimated at $50 million, with a compound annual growth rate of 19 percent projected through 1997, according to Neff.
"To successfully meet today's rigorous time-to-market and quality demands, our customers must have ready access to the most powerful DFT tools possible. This acquisition brings to Mentor Graphics a breadth of test knowledge and experience unparalleled in the industry. By purchasing CheckLogic Systems, Mentor Graphics can strengthen existing core DFT products and develop new products that offer a tight coupling of testability analysis, test synthesis, and ATPG in a top-down design flow -- the most powerful DFT solution available today," stated Walden C. Rhines, Mentor Graphics' president and chief executive officer.
"Joining Mentor Graphics increases their leadership position as a provider of top-down and test point tool solutions in the DFT marketplace," said Michael Chang, president, CheckLogic Systems Inc.
In October, Mentor Graphics indicated its commitment to solve the toughest design and test engineering challenges faced by printed circuit board (PCB) and multichip module (MCM) developers when it announced Virtual Test Manager: TOP(TM) and Physical Test Manager: SITE(TM). Together, the tools span the entire product development cycle from automatic test point analysis and optimization during design entry to physical test site selection and placement at layout.
Mentor Graphics is also shipping several other successful ASIC DFT tools including FlexTest(TM) and FastScan(TM). FastScan averages 10x the capacity and performance of competing full-scan ATPG products while FlexTest provides superior test coverage, performance and capacity. CheckLogic Systems Inc. is a supplier of world-class ATPG tools for ASIC and IC designs. The company's two test solutions, CyCheck and ScanCheck are scan-based, sequential and combinational ATPG tools. ScanCheck is exclusively re-marketed through Mentor Graphics as FastScan, while CyCheck is sold as FlexTest.
Established in 1981, Mentor Graphics Corp. designs, manufactures, markets and distributes electronic design automation (EDA) software and provides professional services supporting its customers' complete design environments. The company is a leader in worldwide EDA sales, with revenues of $340,031,000 over the last reported 12 months. The company currently employs approximately 2,100 people worldwide. In addition to its corporate offices, Mentor Graphics has sales and support offices worldwide. The company's headquarters are located at 8005 S.W. Boeckman Rd., Wilsonville, OR 97070-7777.
