MENASCO COMPLETES FIRST LANDING GEAR FOR BOEING 777

NEW YORK, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Menasco, a unit of Coltec Industries, Inc (NYSE: COT), announced today that it has completed fabrication and assembly of the largest landing gear designed for a commercial jetliner. This landing gear will be installed on Boeing's newest jetliner, the 777.
The 777 will have two main landing gear assemblies that will stand an impressive 14 feet tall and one nose gear assembly. Each main gear assembly has three axles and six wheels, the first time this configuration has been used on a Boeing aircraft. Other features include steering for the main gear to improve maneuverability on runways and taxi areas and extensive use of titanium to decrease weight and improve corrosion resistance.
The initial landing gear assemblies were fabricated at Menasco Aerospace, Coltec's subsidiary in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, and Coltec's Menasco Aerosystems Division in Euless, Texas. Additional subcontracting was accomplished by Messier-Bugatti of Velizy, France. Final assembly of the main and nose landing gear assemblies was performed at Menasco Aerospace.
This first landing gear set, completed on schedule, will be installed on the number one Boeing 777 aircraft, which will be used for certification of the jetliner. First flight of the 777 is scheduled for June 1994 with certification and subsequent delivery to United Airlines in May 1995.
The 777, the world's largest twin-engine jetliner, is slated to set new standards and efficiency for airlines. The 777 will seat between 305 and 400 passengers, depending on the cabin configuration, and have a range of more than 6,000 nautical miles. The aircraft is designed to serve new markets and replace older wide-body jetliners.
Menasco is scheduled to ship three airplane sets of production landing gear and three units for testing to Boeing in 1993. Thirteen airplane sets are scheduled for shipment in 1994.
