MEN LEAD LATE DASH TO RETAILERS.

Byline: Jim Feehan The Register-Guard

It's the day before Christmas, and suddenly, shopping is a guy thing.

Armed with honey-do lists or operating on instinct, scores of men made a last-minute dash Friday to Eugene-Springfield area malls and stores for their holiday shopping.

Welcome to the world of the 11th hour Santas, where procrastinating shoppers - many of them men - go down to the wire.

Glenn Dow of Springfield said he always waits until Dec. 24 to buy holiday gifts. Weaving in and out of shops at the 5th Street Public Market in Eugene, Dow was a man on a mission - to find a holiday gift for his wife. With no particular agenda, Dow said he'll know what to buy when he sees it.

"I was in one store today and I heard a guy say, 'Haven't I been in this store before?' ' Dow said.

About a half-hour later, his search ended when he paid $39 for a hand-painted glass candle holder at Meena Imports.

Melanie Diamond, marketing manager at the 5th Street Public Market, said the shopping district was packed with men Thursday and Friday.

"A high percentage of our last-minute shoppers are men. But don't ask me why," she said.

The reason isn't hard to figure out: Many men find it tedious and frustrating to shop for gifts.

Often, men wait until the last minute, said Susan Ledford, owner and manager of French Quarter Linens at the 5th Street Public Market.

"They're easy to please, and they love the free gift wrapping," she added.

"A lot of the good toys have already been picked over," said Brad Gilbert Brad Gilbert (born August 9, 1961) is an American tennis coach, a television tennis commentator, and former professional tennis player.

By contrast, many women plan their gift buying long in advance.

Rhonda Fenrick of Eugene was at the Gateway Mall on Friday to pick up a gift - a 5-foot-tall mirror for her parents that she selected a month ago.

"It's kind of hard to hide a present this big, so I waited until now to pick it up," Fenrick said as she slid the hefty mirror into the back of her BMW BMW

"She's such a big fan of Bill Clinton, so I got her a copy of his book, `My Life,' ' Stone said as he left Borders.

Just around the corner from Borders, Sarah Peery of Danville, Calif., was seated on a bench outside of Bed Bath and Beyond wrapping some last-minute presents.

"I started shopping in June and actually I'm looking for next year. I don't think anyone really finishes shopping," Peery said.
