The defense sets up the plays, the offense finishes them. That's how it played out for Cal State Northridge Northridge is the name of some places in the United States of America:

 on Thursday night.

The Matadors' defense forced the turnovers, allowing the offense to flourish at the other end of the court as Cal State Northridge held on for a 67-61 Big West Conference win against UC Irvine at the Matadome.

When Matadors forward Jonathan Heard was not stealing the ball from the Anteaters, he was feeding teammates at the opposite basket.

He passed to Calvin Chitwood after a steal underneath the opposite basket. Chitwood took the pass and dunked it with two hands, prompting roars from the crowd. Those are the type of plays the Matadors depended on, because they only shot 40 percent from the field.

We were going to have to get some steals and some deflections. We were able to do that, and it gave us a chance for some easy baskets.''

Heard finished with four steals, three of which came during a 10-0 run early in the second half that put the Matadors (8-7, 2-2) ahead 41-27 with 15:46 left in the game.

But then Irvine (7-10, 1-2) took advantage of CSUN's cold shooting to rally from a 47-29 deficit to take a 51-50 lead with 5:56 left.

``You can never count any team out the way Irvine plays,'' said Heard, who finished with 14 points. ``Coach Braswell said it was going to be a grind-out game.''

The Matadors' defense tightened up, as CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  held the Anteaters to six points in the final three minutes "Three Minutes" is the 46th episode of Lost.
