Rebecca MacDonald frequently volunteered at Sulphur Springs Community School years ago when her sons were students there. She was also committed to animal rescue, taking in stray pets for local kennel owner Mike Lovingood.

``She rescued everything,'' said Lovingood, owner of Calgrove Kennel in Newhall. ``If somebody would have a cat or a dog, and they just couldn't place him, I'd just call Becky.''

She was killed May 3 when her sport utility vehicle veered off Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus and rolled over. Authorities said the crash was likely caused by driver error. She was 42.

A native of Spokane, Wash., MacDonald came to Southern California about 18 years ago. She met her husband, John MacDonald, while she was working at a West Los Angeles

Her husband recalled when one horse had a stomach problem. ``She laid out a cot in the stable and stayed out with him for two nights,'' John MacDonald said.

``Animals are always there when people aren't and times are tough,'' Lovingood said. ``They love you unconditionally. ... She just liked the sincerity of the animals.''

She was a past president of the PTA PTA or parent-teacher association: see parent education.  at Sulphur Springs School, where she help found an annual fund-raiser.

``Anything you needed, she gave 120 percent,'' said Carole van Almelo, a friend and former neighbor. ``She always gave too much.''
