VALENCIA - The clank of the golf clubs and cheers of the fans at Valencia Country Club fell silent Monday and were replaced by the noise of signs, tents and bleachers coming down.

The sounds marked the end of the SBC (1) (SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, TX, www.sbc.com) A large, national telecommunications company that grew from a multitude of local and regional companies, including Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell, into a single, unified brand by 2002.  Senior Classic's second year at the exclusive country club and of what tournament officials called another success.

``It was an exciting finish,'' said Peter deYoung, director of the tournament. ``You have no control over the weather and who wins. We were very fortunate on both.''

It's too early to say how many tourists traveled to watch the golf tournament last week or what impact it had on the local economy, but tournament officials said sunny skies, though windy on Friday and Saturday, attracted more spectators than last year.

Professionals like Tom Kite Thomas Oliver Kite, Jr. (born December 9, 1949) is an American professional golfer.

Kite was born in McKinney, Texas. He began playing golf at age 6 and won his first tournament at age 11.
and Tom Watson also drew larger galleries along with one of the best overall playing fields officials have seen in 15 years.

and Watson who battled it out in the end for the $1.4 million purse PURSE. In Turkey the sum of five hundred dollars is called a purse. Merch. Dict. h.t. , of which the winner received $217,500.

Kite, who opened the final round two strokes behind Watson on Sunday, came through with a birdie on the 18th for a 3-under 69, forcing a playoff play·off also play-off

In the end, Kite hit the green in regulation and missed a 10-foot birdie putt. After Watson missed a 6-foot par putt, Kite tapped in for the victory.

Overall, deYoung said the community was more accepting of the tournament and the tourists this year, and the name recognition it earned for Valencia by CNBC's coverage can only bring more visitors next year.

Tournament officials are still building up the Senior Classic here and the community and the players are getting used to the event at Valencia after moving from the Wilshire Country Club in Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities.  because of limited space, deYoung said.

SBC signed a five-year contract with the country club, which will be renewed annually.

DeYoung said officials have already started planning next year's event and will travel back here in a few weeks to conduct their first meeting.

SBC also plans to launch a 12-month marketing campaign in the community to generate local corporation sponsorships and interest, deYoung said.

Celebrities such as Andy Garcia, Kurt Russell and Alice Cooper who also hit the fairways last week provided another big attraction and deYoung hopes it will be the beginning of attracting many celebrities.

``Every celebrity who came out praised the golf tournament,'' deYoung said. ``They all said they would love to come back. I think that's just a start on what you'll see.''
