MELLON STUART AWARDED $72.6 MILLION CONTRACT
TO RENOVATE METRA TRAIN TERMINAL IN CHICAGO
PITTSBURGH, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- A Mellon Stuart Construction, Inc., joint venture has been awarded a $72.6 million contract to renovate a train terminal for Metra, part of the regional transit authority in Chicago, it was announced today.
The work will be performed during the next four years.
Mellon Stuart is a subsidiary of Michael Baker Corporation (AMEX: BKR). In addition to general contracting, Mellon Stuart provides heavy and highway construction, construction management and design/build capabilities.
Built in 1910, Metra's Northwestern Passenger Terminal covers a 2-1/2 square-block area west of Chicago's Loop.
"Our goal is to restore the two-story facility and maintain its historic significance, while minimizing the impact on commuters," said Robert H. Luffy, Mellon Stuart president.
Restoration plans call for repairing the track bed and replacing the passenger platforms. Also, a six-acre canopy structure will be replaced and a cantilevered glass canopy will be added. In addition, the facade will be restored, lighting will be improved, a first-floor concourse will be replaced and a non-functional track will be returned to service. These renovations will take place in nine phases.
Michael Baker Corporation subsidiaries provide engineering, construction, and operations and maintenance services worldwide.
