 MELLON BANK AND GIANT EAGLE
TO BRING SUPERMARKET BANKING TO ERIE COUNTY
ERIE, Pa., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Mellon Bank and Giant Eagle today announced plans to expand their highly successful supermarket banking program into northwestern Pennsylvania.
In April and May, Mellon will open full-service consumer branch offices and bring the convenience of seven-day-a-week banking to customers of the Giant Eagle Harborcreek Township supermarket, located at 4400 Buffalo Road in Erie, Pa., and the Giant Eagle Yorktown Square store, located in Millcreek Township, Pa., at 2510 W. 12th Street.
Mellon's new Erie County supermarket branches will offer extended evening and weekend hours, as do all such branches Mellon operates. About 425 square feet in size, these supermarket branches will contain a private office for loan applications, mortgages and investments; two customer service areas; and two deposit stations. All consumer banking products and services offered at Mellon's traditional branches -- excluding safe deposit boxes -- will be available at the supermarket branches. Six full-time employees (manager, assistant manager and four customer service representatives) will staff the office, providing 59 hours of service each week.
Mellon has installed 14 branch offices in Giant Eagle stores in southwestern Pennsylvania since announcing the largest supermarket banking program in the northeastern United States in July 1990. The bank anticipates opening another five branches in Giant Eagle stores in the Pittsburgh area during 1992.
"Supermarket banking is the biggest advance in customer convenience since the advent of the automated teller machine," said Glenn R. Wible, vice president and head of the branch offices for Mellon Bank -- Northern Region. "By combining supermarket banking and existing telephone banking services, which already operate seven days a week, we will offer Mellon customers the most convenient hours in our marketplace, enabling them to bank in the evenings and on weekends."
"With the addition of Mellon's supermarket banks, Giant Eagle customers will have a package of services that are unmatched in northwestern Pennsylvania," said Joseph R. Faccenda, senior vice president of merchandising for Giant Eagle. "We're confident that Mellon's new supermarket offices will enjoy the same success in Erie that they've gained in the Pittsburgh area, providing us with another way to increase customer satisfaction."
Wible noted that supermarket banking has proven to be a cost- effective way of expanding Mellon's branch network. "Our program in western Pennsylvania has enabled us to reach a broader base of customers," he said. "We believe there's strong interest in Erie for customers to receive complete banking services seven days a week."
As with any new branch opening, Mellon must file an application and receive approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. The applications for the new branches are expected to be filed today.
Mellon Bank, N.A. is the largest bank in Pennsylvania.
