Shopper's Paradise

Puerto Rico draws shoppers from throughout the Caribbean and beyond. There is no sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government. , and visitors are not required to pay duty upon return to the mainland.

Quaint shops in Old San Juan abound with jewelry and local handicrafts such as santos (carved wooden figurines of saints or religious scenes), cuatros and guiros (local musical instruments) and masks.

There are also outlet stores and shopping malls, such as Plaza Las Americas in Hato Rey, the Caribbean's largest shopping complex with over 200 stores, and Plaza Carolina. Shopping tours can be arranged at the hotels or through tour companies.

Historic views, progressive vision The massive walls of Old San Juan and the fortress of El Morro once kept invaders out of this fascinating city. But soon, a bold new shape will rise alongside the old walls -- an architecturally dynamic structure which will bring new visitors eager to experience all this island has to offer. Construction is now underway on the new Puerto Rico Convention Center, located in San Juan, convenient to Old San Juan, the Luis Munoz Mann International Airport and the Condado hotels and tourist district. It will connect with an 800-room hotel.

"The Puerto Rico Convention Center enables us to accommodate events which we have not been able to previously because of size or other special requirements," stated Jose A. Corujo, Executive Director, Puerto Rico Tourism Company. "In addition to developing a structure that is consistent with the quality and standards of a world-class convention center - we've also designed a facility with an architectural expression which recalls the island's natural resources and unique beauty to offer a truly distinctive convention and travel experience."

A design that 'flows'

The architecture and other elements of the Puerto Rico Convention Center are designed to reflect Puerto Rico's history and natural beauty. The main artery of the district will be the Grand Canal Grand Canal, Chinese Da Yunhe [large transit river], longest in the world, extending c.1,000 mi (1,600 km) from Beijing to Hangzhou, E China, and forming an important north-south waterway on the North China Plain. The canal was started in the 6th cent. A series of scenic bridges will provide access to and from the Center. One side of the canal will have restaurants, outdoor cafes, shops and a four-level promenade; the contrasting "natural edge" of the canal will become Canal Park

, designated exclusively as open space for recreational use.

The dominant architectural expression will be provided by the large, sweeping roof forms that recall waves in their shape, color and translucency. Also, Puerto Rico's rain forest will emerge as a theme for the center, through the use of indigenous flora and fauna to create an "urban forest" that will become a central theme for the development.

Facilities for the future

The new Convention Center is not just beautiful -- its design also reflects the importance of providing meeting planners and attendees with functional space, efficient service and high-tech amenities. With that goal in mind, the new Center will be among the most advanced meeting spaces in America, and the premier meeting space in the Caribbean.

The Americas World Trade District

The Puerto Rico Convention Center will be the centerpiece of the largest integrated development project of its kind in the Americas. The District will include the new World Trade Center, specifically developed to be home to U.S. and international corporations -- including Puerto Rican businesses -- involved in the global economy. A mix of restaurants and shops, office and residential areas, landscaped open space, entertainment including a multiplex See multiplexing.  cinema, and the Prisma children's science center will attract and entertain hundreds of thousands of meetings attendees and business travelers who will visit and work in the District each year.
