MEDIWARE WINS COMPETITION FOR SURGICAL SUITE SYSTEM AT MAJOR WEST COAST HOSPITAL

 MEDIWARE WINS COMPETITION FOR SURGICAL
SUITE SYSTEM AT MAJOR WEST COAST HOSPITAL
MELVILLE, N.Y., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Mediware Information Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MEDW) won an industry-wide competitive bid to install an integrated, fault-tolerant information system to govern management of 11 operating suites at St. Jude's Medical Center, Fullerton, Calif.
The order is considered significant because it marks the first new installation of the company's Surgiware product. The system helps hospitals improve profitability of surgical suites, generally their largest revenue source.
The St. Jude order includes an IBM RS/6000 Model 530H central processor serving a network of 17 PCs. It is replacing an IBAX O.R.STAR system, and will be on-line in March, according to Mediware.
"St. Jude's decision confirms the strong competitive advantages of Surgiware," said Colin Shanks, president of Mediware. "It not only replaced a competitive product, but also was selected in preference to all our competitors. A key competitive feature is the system's greatly improved management of supplies and materials," he added.
As part of the agreement, Mediware will perform a database conversion from St. Jude's existing IBAX system.
Surgiware is a new information management tool designed to reduce waste, lower costs and improve productivity in surgical centers, while enhancing the quality of patient care. It's an integrated, fault- tolerant system that provides scheduling, dynamic scheduling, case cart management with inventory control and holding area, and intraoperative/PACU logging. Surgiware specializes in user-defined reporting and multi-site configurations.
Mediware is a provider of UNIX-based clinical information systems for hospitals. It currently offers systems for the hospital blood bank (Hemocare), pharmacy (Digimedics) and surgical suite (Surgiware).
IBAX and O.R.STAR are registered trademarks of IBAX Health Care Systems, a partnership of IBM and Baxter subsidiaries.
