MEDICAL GRAPHICS CORPORATION REPORTS80 PERCENT INCREASE IN FIRST QUARTER EARNINGS

ST. PAUL, Minn., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Medical Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MGCC), an innovator in the design and manufacture of non-invasive diagnostic systems for heart and lung disease, announced today sales of $4.3 million for its first quarter ended March 31, 1993, a 13 percent increase above the $3.8 million achieved in the same quarter in 1992. Net earnings for the quarter were $167,890, or $.07 cents per share, an 80 percent increase from the previous year's first quarter earnings of $93,178, or $.04 cents per share. Gross margins for the quarter were 50.7 percent versus 51.5 percent for the prior year's period due to a change in margins on service and supplies related to product mix.
Domestic sales increased 19 percent and service and supplies sales increased 25 percent, while international sales decreased 2 percent. The increase in domestic sales and service and supplies reflects increased market penetration of the new MedGraphics product line and an increase in associated service and supply revenues. Although sales increased in certain foreign markets, other markets suffered due to currency fluctuations and a restructuring of the company's international selling process.
"We are pleased with the market's acceptance of our new products and with the strong foundation of our distribution system," said Catherine A. Anderson, chairman, president and chief executive officer.
"Although some uncertainty exists in the market pending the Clinton administration's health care reforms, we believe the future of Medical Graphics Corporation is stronger than ever," said Anderson. "With our emphasis on prevention and early detection, MedGraphics systems reduce health care costs and provide objective measurements for quality patient management and improved outcomes."
Medical Graphics Corporation designs, manufactures and markets non- invasive diagnostic systems for the prevention, early detection and cost-effective treatment of heart and lung disease, the leading causes of death and rising health care costs. From its company headquarters in St. Paul and Dusseldorf, Germany, Medical Graphics does business in 30 countries.
