MEDICAID POINT OF SERVICE SYSTEM SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED IN OKLAHOMA

MCLEAN, Va., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Paramax Systems Corporation, a Unisys Company, announced today the successful implementation of its Medicaid Point of Service (POS) system for the state of Oklahoma. The POS is designed to allow dispensing pharmacies to file claims for payment by Medicaid through online transactions from their terminals directly to a Medicaid computer via a telecommunications network.
The benefits to pharmacies using the POS system include immediate eligibility verification, immediate claims status notification, improved timeliness of claims payment, immediate error correction capability, increased ability to identify inappropriate services and immediate notification of payment amount.
The eligibility verification and claims capture capabilities became operational on Jan. 4, 1993. The remaining features went online on March 1. The system is expandable to process other claim types, such as medical and dental claims, at a later date.
"This is an important step for us as one of the nation's leading Medicaid transaction processors. It is crucial for the Medicaid system because of the timeliness and verifiability of online transactions," said Jim Bridges, vice president and general manager of Paramax's Systems Services division, which manages the program.
The POS provides the following online services to dispensing pharmacies:
-- Eligibility verification -- includes benefit coverage, third party liability, managed care participation, restricted services and properly enrolled providers.
-- Claims data capture -- for prescription drugs, including identification of the prescriber.
-- Claims adjudication -- includes edits, claim status notification for the provider and claim preparation for payment processing.
-- Prospective Drug Utilization Review (DUR) -- to help ensure that prescriptions, before they are filled, are appropriate, medically necessary and not likely to produce adverse medical results.
The POS system also processes prescription drug claims submitted on paper, diskette and tape. Claim data will be routinely analyzed via a retrospective DUR system to identify usage patterns.
The Paramax POS system allows pharmacies to use their existing PCs/terminals and to communicate over an existing commercial telecommunications network. The POS runs on a Unisys U6000/75 Unix Minicomputer, which interfaces with the Medicaid Management Information System mainframe.
